Posts Available & Eligibility Criteria

Navik (General Duty)

Candidates must have passed Class 12 with Maths and Physics from a COBSE-recognized board. This position involves operating navigation equipment, assisting in search and rescue, and law enforcement missions along the coast.

Navik (Domestic Branch)

This role is open to candidates who have passed Class 10. It involves responsibilities related to cooking, housekeeping, and shipboard sanitation—essential for smooth operations at sea.

Yantrik (Technical Branch)

Applicants must have passed Class 10 and hold a Diploma (2 to 4 years) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Telecommunication (Radio/Power) Engineering from an AICTE-recognized institution. Engineering diploma holders are assigned critical technical roles on board ships and establishments.

Age Requirements

Candidates must be aged between 18 to 22 years as of the following cut-off dates:

  • Navik (GD) & (DB): Born between 01 Aug 2004 and 01 Aug 2008
  • Yantrik: Born between 01 Mar 2004 and 01 Mar 2008

Age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) applies, subject to reserved posts availability.

Navik posts are zone-wise and include five regions: North, South, East, West, and Central. The merit list will be prepared separately for each zone.

Stages of the Selection Process

Stage-I: Online Computer-Based Test

Candidates appear for an objective exam based on their applied post:

  • Navik (DB): Section I (10th syllabus)
  • Navik (GD): Section I & II (10th + 12th Maths & Physics)
  • Yantrik: Section I + specific trade section (III, IV, or V)

There is no negative marking, and normalization will be applied for multi-shift exams.

Stage-II: PFT, Document Check, and Medical

Shortlisted candidates undergo a Physical Fitness Test which includes:

  • 1.6 km run in 7 minutes
  • 20 squats
  • 10 push-ups

This is followed by biometric verification, original document check, and recruitment medical examination.

Stage-III: Final Verification at INS Chilka

Provisionally selected candidates report to INS Chilka for:

  • Identity and biometric check
  • Document re-verification
  • Pre-enrolment medical exam
  • Police verification submission

Stage-IV: Post-Verification Scrutiny

Documents are cross-verified from issuing authorities. If any are found invalid, candidature will be cancelled, even after training commences.

Medical Standards

To qualify, candidates must meet the following physical standards:

  • Height: Minimum 157 cm (relaxation applicable for tribal and island states)
  • Chest: Minimum expansion 5 cm
  • Weight: Proportionate to age and height
  • Hearing: Normal
  • Tattoos: Only permitted on inner forearm and reverse side of palm (with exceptions for tribal communities)
